Expert Application FAQs
- Q: Why choose a ceramic tip over a stainless steel tip?
- A: Ceramic tips last much longer when measuring against steel targets. They resist material transfer and wear. This prevents calibration drift and reduces maintenance.
- Q: Can I use this 5m probe with a 9m Proximitor cable?
- A: No. You must match the probe length to the Proximitor. A 5m probe is designed for use only with a 5m Proximitor sensor. Mixing lengths will cause incorrect readings.
- Q: What is the most common installation error?
- A> Not achieving the proper “null voltage” or “gap voltage”. After mechanical installation, you must electrically set the probe to its recommended voltage (approx. -10 Vdc) using the Proximitor’s trim pot.
- Q: How do I check if a probe is good before installing it?
- A: Measure the resistance between the center conductor and outer shield. It should be between 8.0 and 9.4 Ohms at room temperature. Also, check for a short to the metal case.
- Q: Can this probe be used in an area with hydrogen gas?
- A: Yes. The ceramic tip and FEP cable are inert to most chemicals, including hydrogen. The ATEX/IECEx certification confirms its suitability for many hazardous gas atmospheres.
