Description
Product Description – Triconex 3806E Analog Output Module
A TMR analog output for critical jobs
The Model 3806E is a Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) analog output module. First, it receives signals from three main processor channels. Then it votes on each set of data. After that, it picks one healthy channel to drive the eight outputs.
Smart self-checks keep you safe
This module monitors its own current outputs as input voltages. Additionally, it keeps an internal voltage reference. As a result, it provides self-calibration and health information. Each channel has a current loopback circuit. Consequently, this verifies analog signals without needing a load or channel selection.
Handles faults without stopping
The design prevents a non-selected channel from driving signals to the field. Meanwhile, ongoing diagnostics test every channel and circuit. If any diagnostic fails, the faulty channel turns off. Then the Fault indicator lights up, which activates the chassis alarm. However, note carefully: the Fault light means only one channel has a problem, not the whole module. Therefore, the module keeps working properly even with two failed channels.
Load detection and power redundancy
A LOAD indicator turns on if the module cannot drive current to one or more outputs. Thus, you get open loop detection. For power, the module provides redundant loop power sources. It has individual indicators called PWR1 and PWR2. Remember: you must supply external loop power yourself.
Built for tough machines
The 3806E High Current AO module is optimized for turbomachinery applications. Additionally, it supports hot-spare capability. Therefore, you can replace a faulty module online without stopping the system. The module requires a separate external termination panel (ETP) with a cable to the Tricon backplane. Also, it is mechanically keyed to prevent wrong installation.

Installation & Requirements
First, mount the module in a configured Tricon chassis. The keying prevents wrong insertion.
Next, connect a separate external termination panel (ETP) using a cable to the backplane.
Then, supply your own external loop power (24-42.5 VDC, up to 1 amp per module).
Additionally, the module supports a hot-spare. Therefore, you can replace a faulty module online.
It also pairs with Modicon Quantum systems when using the correct backplane.
Diagnostic Capabilities
Current loopback circuit verifies signal accuracy without a load.
Internal voltage reference provides self-calibration and health info.
A LOAD indicator lights up for open loop detection on any output.
PWR1 and PWR2 show if external loop power is present.
The module continues working properly with up to two failed channels.
Typical Applications
Turbomachinery control (optimized for this)
4-20 mA analog output for actuators and valves
20-320 mA high current output for special devices
Safety systems needing TMR fault tolerance
Redundant loop power applications
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1: What does the LOAD indicator mean when it turns on?
A1: The LOAD indicator means the module cannot drive current to one or more outputs. In other words, you have an open loop. First, check your field wiring. Then verify the external loop power supply.
Q2: I see a FAULT light, but all my outputs still work. Should I worry?
A2: No need to worry immediately. The FAULT light means one channel has failed. However, the module has three channels total. Therefore, it keeps working with the remaining two good channels. Still, you should order a replacement soon to restore full TMR protection.
Q3: Can I use this module with a 4-20 mA device that needs isolation?
A3: No, this module has commoned return and is DC coupled. It does not provide point isolation. For isolated analog outputs, choose a different Triconex model. Use the 3806E only where commoned return is acceptable.
Q4: What is the warranty and how do you ship?
A4: We offer 12 months warranty from delivery date. It covers manufacturing defects only. We ship worldwide via FedEx, UPS, or DHL. A tracking number is provided for every order. For warranty claims, keep the module in its original packaging.
Q5: How many spare 3806E modules should I keep in stock?
A5: Keep at least one hot-spare per chassis. If you run turbomachinery applications 24/7, keep two spares. Why? Because these high current outputs work hard and may fail more often than standard 4-20 mA modules. Also, test your spare every 3 months by swapping it in during a planned outage.
Selection Guide (Buying Advice)
Do not choose the 3806E for: Isolated output needs. Very high load resistance (check the max load table first). Applications below 4 mA. Systems without external loop power.
Power supply tip: Use a 24 VDC supply rated at 1 amp per module. For redundancy, connect two supplies to PWR1 and PWR2 separately.
Spare module advice: Buy one spare for every 5 working modules in turbomachinery duty. Label the spare with its purchase date. Rotate it into service every 6 months.
