Description
Meet the Model 3008 – Tricon Main Processor
- Model 3008 Main Processors work with Tricon v9.6 and later systems.
- Every Tricon main chassis needs three MPs installed.
- Each MP talks to its I/O subsystem and runs your control program.
- They work together using triple-modular redundancy (TMR) for safety.

LED Status Indicators
- PASS – Module passed self-diagnostics
- FAULT – Module has a fault. Replace it.
- ACTIVE – Module is running user control program
- MAINT1 / MAINT2 – Maintenance indicators
- COM TX / COM RX – Transmitting/receiving on COMM bus
- I/O TX / I/O RX – Transmitting/receiving on I/O bus
Sequence of Events (SOE) & Time Sync
- MPs check discrete variables for state changes (events) each scan.
- When an event occurs, MPs save the variable state and time stamp in SOE buffer.
- Connect multiple Tricon systems via NCMs for consistent time base.
- This ensures accurate SOE time-stamping across large plants.
Built-in Diagnostics
- Extensive checks validate MP, I/O module, and communication channel health.
- Transient faults – recorded and masked by hardware voting circuit.
- Persistent faults – diagnosed. Replace the faulty module while system runs (hot-swap).
- MP diagnostics verify:
- Fixed-program memory
- Static RAM
Installation Guide
- Install three Model 3008 MPs in the main Tricon chassis.
- Push each module firmly into its slot until locked.
- Check PASS LED after power-up. Green means OK.
- For Tricon v9.6 or later only. Older firmware not compatible.
- Refer to the Planning and Installation Guide for Tricon Systems for full details.
Easy Debug & Maintenance
- LEDs give instant status. No software needed for basic checks.
- Hot replacement – replace a faulty MP without shutting down the system.
- Transient fault log helps find intermittent issues.
- Use Tricon engineering software to read diagnostic records.
Compatibility
- Works only with Tricon v9.6 or newer systems.
- Compatible with all Tricon I/O modules (analog, digital, etc.).
- For integration with other PLCs, use NCM communication modules.
- Can connect to Modicon Quantum via Modbus or gateway.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- Question: Why do I need three Model 3008 MPs?
Answer: Tricon uses TMR. Three MPs vote on outputs. One can fail without stopping the system.
- Question: Can I use Model 3008 with older Tricon v8 or v7?
Answer: No. Model 3008 requires Tricon v9.6 or later. Older versions are not compatible.
- Question: What happens if one MP shows FAULT LED?
Answer: Replace it while the system runs. The other two MPs keep control.
- Question: Is the 32 KB SRAM battery replaceable?
Answer: Yes. The battery backs up SRAM. Change it during scheduled maintenance.
- Question: Does this module support hot-swap?
Answer: Yes. Tricon supports hot replacement. No need to power down.
Experience-based Q&A (Field Notes)
- Question: My system shows PASS on all MPs but one I/O module is dead.
Answer: Check the I/O bus connections. Replace the I/O module first. MPs are likely fine.
- Question: The ACTIVE LED blinks slowly. Is that normal?
Answer: Yes. Blinking means the MP is running the control program. Steady on/off indicates a problem.
- Question: We see transient faults recorded weekly. Should we replace the MP?
Answer: Not yet. Transient faults are normal in noisy environments. Monitor persistent faults instead.
Buying Guide – Select the Right Main Processor
- Choose Model 3008 if your Tricon system runs v9.6 or newer firmware.
- For older Tricon systems (v7 or v8), look for older MP models (e.g., 3007).
- Always buy three units per chassis – one spare recommended for critical sites.
- Check your memory needs: 16 MB DRAM is enough for most safety programs.
- Need SOE time-stamping across multiple Tricon racks? Order NCM modules separately.
