High Integrity TMR Digital Input for Safety Systems
The Triconex 3503E is a Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) digital input module. It serves critical safety applications requiring de-energize-to-trip logic. Each of the 32 inputs processes data through three isolated channels. Main processors vote on all input data before execution. This design ensures highest integrity and maximum availability. All critical signal paths are 100% triplicated. The module supports hot-spare capability for non-stop operation. A separate external termination panel (ETP) connects via cable to the Tricon backplane. Mechanical keying prevents incorrect installation.
Built-in Stuck-ON Self-Test
The Models 3502E, 3503E, and 3505E can self-test for stuck-ON conditions. A switch inside the input circuitry closes to read a zero (OFF) state. The I/O communication processor freezes the last data during this test. This feature is vital for systems set up with de-energize-to-trip capability.
Diagnostic Capability & Fault Handling
Each channel runs complete, ongoing diagnostics. Any channel diagnostic failure activates the module Fault indicator. The chassis alarm signal then turns on. The Fault indicator points to a specific channel fault, not a whole module failure. The module operates properly with a single fault. It may continue to operate with certain multiple faults.

Q1: Can the 3503E replace an older 3503E without changing wiring?
Yes. It has the same form, fit, and function. Use the same ETP and backplane.
Q2: How do I know if a specific channel has a stuck-ON fault?
Run the onboard self-test. The module will report the fault via the I/O communication processor. No external tool is needed.
Q3: What happens if one channel fails during operation?
The other two channels continue to vote correctly. The module stays fully operational. This is the TMR advantage.
Q4: Can I use this module with 48 VDC field devices?
No. Maximum voltage is 42.5 VAC/VDC. Exceeding this may damage the module.
Q5: Why does the module need an external termination panel?
